1. We would like to start with a glimpse of your childhood and academic journey.

Reflecting on my childhood brings back a flood of wonderful and joyful memories. As the eldest child in my family, I was showered with love and care by my parents. Growing up in Bogra, a small town, and with strict parents, I was initially a shy child. However, books became my constant companions, both for stories and academics, as I found solace and fascination within their pages. Additionally, dancing became a cherished hobby of mine, bringing me joy and self-expression.

I began my educational journey at Bogra Cantonment Public School and College, where I spent a remarkable 14 years until completing my 12th grade. Throughout this time, I forged deep bonds with a wonderful group of friends, and the memories we created together still hold a special place in my heart. The days spent in school were truly remarkable and filled with cherished moments.

With the presence of my two siblings, the joy of books, the passion for dance, the laughter of my school friends, and the unwavering support of my parents, my childhood was truly extraordinary. Reflecting on those treasured memories transports me back to a time of innocence and wonder that will always hold a special significance in my life.

2. Shed some light on your career journey and what was the aspiration behind forming Amal Foundation?

After completing high school, I embarked on my undergraduate studies at Dhaka University, majoring in Finance. Transitioning from a science background to a business department posed a significant challenge, but I embraced the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and skills.

During my time in university, my passion for volunteer work surpassed my academic pursuits. Engaging in various voluntary activities and research projects with organizations like the United Nations became incredibly fulfilling for me. One impactful experience stands out in my memory. Our team visited a school in a remote area where we discovered a high dropout rate among students. Through conversations with the local community, we learned that the absence of proper sanitation facilities, particularly for girls, was a significant barrier to their education. Determined to make a difference, we collaborated with an agency to construct a sanitary toilet in the school. Within a short period, the dropout rate significantly decreased, highlighting the profound impact of even small-scale initiatives.

This realization fueled my passion for volunteerism, recognizing that meaningful change can be achieved through small acts of kindness. It was during this time that I discovered my inspiration to make a positive impact in society through my work.

Subsequently, I pursued my master’s degree in Social Business from the University of Colorado in the United States. Uncertain about my future path, I was fortunate to have mentors who guided and encouraged me to pursue my dreams. Following my master’s program, I had the invaluable opportunity to work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where I further honed my skills and expanded my knowledge. Immersed in the foundation’s work, I realized my deep-rooted desire to return to Bangladesh and apply my expertise to drive positive change in my home country.

In 2015, I made the decision to come back to Bangladesh and establish the Amal Foundation, aptly named after the Arabic word for “Hope.” This marked the beginning of our journey to create a better future and instill hope in the lives of individuals and communities.

3. How has the Amal Foundation evolved over the years? Briefly describe its activities and projects which are bringing changes into the community.

Amal Foundation has made remarkable strides in the past 7-8 years, starting as a small team driven by belief and personal savings. Today, our organization has grown significantly, comprising 42 dedicated individuals across the country.

Throughout our journey, Amal Foundation has continually evolved, both internally and through the impactful projects we undertake. Recognizing the importance of thorough research and community needs assessment, we approach each project with meticulous planning and on-the-ground assessments. Our focus areas encompass Education, Health, Empowerment, and Crisis Situations, with a particular emphasis on climate-challenged regions such as the coastal areas of North Bengal, Khulna, Koyra, and Cox’s Bazar.

Education plays a pivotal role in our initiatives, aiming to eradicate child marriage and foster female empowerment. In communities where early marriage is prevalent, we provide financial assistance and educational opportunities for girls, empowering them to build independent and fulfilling lives. Our Skills Centers offer vocational training to women in rural areas, enabling them to become self-reliant and overcome societal limitations.

Amal Foundation also stands by communities during times of crisis, offering essential relief and support to disaster victims. Through our Zakat Empowerment initiative, we provide tangible assets like shops, cattle, or rickshaws to individuals, helping them regain financial independence and stability.

Supporting women and championing their empowerment is a significant aspect of our work. We assist those who have faced early marriage and subsequent hardships, offering them educational opportunities or vocational training. Our goal is to enable these women to become financially independent by equipping them with the necessary skills and connecting them to relevant markets.

Furthermore, we have implemented a unique loan program that encourages responsible practices. By providing loans for purchasing livestock or agricultural products, we promote sustainable livelihoods while emphasizing that families must not marry off their daughters before the age of 18. This initiative fosters both economic stability and educational opportunities for young girls, contributing to long-term community development.

Amal Foundation’s endeavors are driven by the desire for continuous and meaningful change. While our projects may vary in scale, we believe that even small-scale efforts can have a profound impact on individuals and communities. Through sustained commitment and innovative approaches, we strive to create a brighter future.

4. What is the most rewarding aspect of your work with the Amal Foundation and how does it make you feel?

Witnessing the joy and smiles on people’s faces after we’ve made a positive impact in their lives is truly the most fulfilling aspect of our work. It saddens me to see individuals who are neglected and lacking their basic needs, as every person deserves a life of dignity and opportunity. By working towards improving their lives, even in small ways, we aim to bring about meaningful change and instill a sense of pride within ourselves and the communities we serve.

Additionally, when our team members express their own happiness and contentment derived from their contributions, it further reinforces the value and significance of our collective efforts. Knowing that we are making a difference, both in the lives of those we serve and in the hearts of our team members, inspires us to continue our mission and uplift lives.

5. How have you seen the communities you work with change over time and what role has Amal Foundation played in this transformation?

AMAL Foundation has been dedicated to community development since its inception, focusing particularly on underprivileged areas such as char riverine regions. Our work has brought significant changes to these communities, addressing issues like early marriage and limited access to education.

Through our initiatives, including the Child Marriage Prevention Loan (CMPL), girls in rural areas now have the opportunity to pursue education and enjoy equal rights. Moreover, we have empowered women by providing them with skills training, enabling them to become independent, confident, and economically self-sufficient. The positive transformation in the mindset of the community towards women’s empowerment, education, and child marriage prevention has been truly remarkable.

AMAL Foundation follows a sustainable approach to development, ensuring that our interventions have long-lasting effects. Whether it’s providing support during floods or engaging in awareness campaigns, we are committed to being involved from the beginning to the end, fostering significant changes in the community. By leveraging successful models and continuous improvement, we attempt to create a positive impact on a larger scale.

To date, our work has directly and indirectly benefited around 50,000 women, enabling them to earn a minimum monthly income of BDT 8,000, fostering financial independence and better livelihood opportunities.

The changes we witness in these communities are substantial, and our commitment to sustainable development continues to make a difference in the lives of those we serve.

6. How do you envision the role of technology in the future of development work and how is Amal Foundation staying ahead of the curve in this regard?

Technology plays a vital role in the work of AMAL Foundation. We embrace technology in various aspects of our projects, utilizing software applications and components to enhance implementation and maintain clarity. For instance, in the education sector, we leverage technology for distance learning initiatives, ensuring access to education even in remote areas. Additionally, we employ technology in projects such as solar power installations and biometric systems, promoting sustainability and reducing energy costs. Our ‘Solar Home Project’ aims to install solar panels in homes and schools, mitigating the increasing electricity bills faced by communities in char areas while reducing emissions to combat climate change. Through our use of technology, we strive to optimize project outcomes and make a positive impact on the communities we serve.
