Cold Shoulders VS. Cigarette Pants

Bangladesh’s fashion scene, which draws influence from many cultures, is constantly evolving. Up until a few years ago long-length kameezes were all the rage. Whereas, today people are opting for salwars with shorter lengths. Pastels have won over bold colors. Florals are competing head-to-head with patterns. And unlike the past decade, comfort is now the main priority for most consumers.

To keep up with the changing times and consumer’s changing preferences, fashion brands are constantly having to come up with new ideas. One fashion trend that has made a comeback is ‘Cold-Shoulders’. This trend dates back to the 1930s when famous fashion designer Coco Chanel created a dress for veteran film star Marlene Dietrich by taking off a few inches of material from the shoulders.

However, cultural icon Brigitte Bardot is also said to have popularized this trend back in the 1950s and ‘60s. Her signature style was off-the-shoulder dresses and tops which led to the trend to be dubbed as ‘The Bardot’. Back in 1993, Donna Karan dressed Hillary Clinton, who was the First Lady of United States at the time, in a full sleeved gown with cut outs at the shoulders – a look which turned a lot of heads. The cold-shoulders trend has continued to pop-up through the decades and even though it is slowly dying out now, with crop-tops and street fashion seeping into the current fashion scene, it will surely be back in a few years.

Pros of going cold-shoulder:

1) Cold-shoulders go really well with v-shaped necklines.

2) Helps you keep cool while showing your shoulders off in a chic manner.

Cons of going cold-shoulder:

1) The look does not compliment chokers all that well

In terms of traditional fashion, Cigarette pants, also known as Slim-fit pants and Pencil pants, have recently taken the world by storm. Cigarette pants are often described as pants that are slim-fitted and generally end a few inches above the ankles. Unlike common trousers which are usually tapered or flared towards the legs, Cigarette pants are straight ended – which make them perfect to be paired up with short-kameezes. The fashion trend of Cigarette pants is however not new – it was very popular back in the 1950s. Men used to prefer them in Black, whereas women wore them in all colors and materials– even denim.  Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Sandra Dee have been rumored to be big fans of this particular article of clothing. Cigarette pants which are considered casual, classic and chic are perfect to wear to work. Additionally, due to their short length, they are suitable to wear out in rainy days to avoid mud-stains.

Cigarette pants Pros:

1) Compliments pump and kitten heels very well

2) Goes very well with long kameeezes

Cigarette Pants Cons:

1) You need to find the right fit

There’s never a right choice when it comes to fashion – it all depends on individual tastes, preferences and priorities. So if you prefer to follow the western route, or the traditional route, it’s all the same, just as long as you’re comfortable. In the end, fashion is what you make of it.

You. Yes, you.
