Unlocking Abilities: A Holistic Approach to Learning

Saira Nazneen Ahsan
Managing Director

Q. Let’s start with your inspiration behind Sunshine Learning Center, and what gap did you hope to fill in the education sector for students with learning disabilities?

In 2017, I returned from abroad and engaged in a conversation with my friends about what I could do next. At that time, I was also working as a language trainer at the British Council. I contemplated the idea of starting something of my own, given my educational background and experience in a specialized field. It was during this discussion that my friends inspired me to work with children with special needs. Initially, I didn’t view it as a professional endeavor; it was more about pursuing my passion and love for these children. However, as time went on, I realized the immense potential and the pressing needs in this field.

This is when Sunshine Learning Center was born, and it quickly became a labor of love for me. Over time, it has grown to become a project that I hold dear, almost like my own child. I cherish each student with any disabilities as if they were my own, and I instill this same love and dedication in my employees. One of our fundamental requirements for working at the center is a deep-seated affection for these children and their families. As a result, our team is exceptionally dedicated to our cause.

My inspiration to start this center has several facets. One key source of inspiration stems from my academic journey, particularly as a Monash graduate. During my master’s program, I was tasked with delving into special education and the creation of inclusive classroom setups. I had to study comprehensive modules on curriculum planning, strategic planning, and running centers for special needs children. These educational experiences provided a strong foundation for my vision.

Furthermore, my personal life has been deeply intertwined with this field. My youngest child is a cancer survivor and faces various health issues, which have caused him to lag behind in his studies. This experience has given me a profound connection with individuals who face similar challenges. Additionally, I have a network of friends who are psychologists, therapists, and specialists, all of whom have greatly influenced my dedication to this cause.

In June 2017, I took the plunge and started the Sunshine Learning Center with just two children. Within three months, more students began to join the center, underscoring the need for our services. To ensure the best possible therapy, we adhere to a strict and goal-oriented approach. We are dedicated to providing the utmost support to help each child achieve their unique goals.

Sometimes, parents may not fully comprehend the level of cooperation and attention we ask of them. It’s essential to emphasize that certain issues take time to address. For instance, children with autism may not be fully cured, but with patience and time, significant progress can be made over several years. We believe in the importance of parental support and understanding as we work together to improve the lives of these special children.

Q. How does Sunshine Learning Center differ from traditional educational institutions in terms of catering to students with learning disabilities?

Sunshine Learning Center stands out as a truly unique and pioneering institution. What sets us apart is our holistic approach, which integrates speech therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, behavior modification, and educational therapy, along with a focus on fine arts. This combination creates a distinctive model that has demonstrated remarkable results.

When I first embarked on this journey, I held reservations about the effectiveness of this model, considering the extensive services and team required to execute it. However, over the years, we have seen tremendous progress, with nearly four children achieving remarkable growth and development. This success has reinforced our confidence in the efficacy of our model. We are committed to fulfilling every promise we make to parents and are deeply committed to child safety and protection.

In London, I completed a Certificate course on pre-school practice, focusing on child safety, Later at British Council I completed child safety training. My 30 years teaching enhanced my knowledge on child safety. I have created an environment that prioritizes child safety. We have implemented a comprehensive system that ensures the safety of every child in our care. Our classrooms are equipped with CCTV cameras, and these live streaming are accessible on my phone as well as the phones of our senior teachers. Our foremost principle is the unwavering commitment to preventing any form of child abuse, a principle that we rigorously uphold.

Sunshine Learning Center is proactive, unique, and guided by my unwavering dedication. To me, this work is akin to a religious responsibility. Consequently, I am directly involved in the day-to-day operations of our center, ensuring the highest level of care and support for our children. We recognize the multifaceted challenges that parents of special children face. Hence, we offer counseling and support to help them navigate their professional and personal lives, often disrupted by their child’s needs. In severe cases, we refer parents to psychologists, acknowledging the tremendous stress they may undergo.

Our commitment to the well-being of special children and their families is further demonstrated through our annual training programs. These sessions focus on behavior modification, patience, and hands-on training for parents on how to support their child’s education. We understand the unique demands and challenges parents face, particularly with high-performing children, and offer guidance and support.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we took the initiative to launch online services within just 10 days of the lockdown. We provided parents with insights into occupational therapy, empowering them with a better understanding of the human body. All our therapists are qualified, holding certifications from reputable organizations like CRP, and we continuously invest in professional development to stay at the forefront of our field.

Sunshine Learning Center supports parents with great empathy and care. SLC does parents counselling on and off and refers to psychologist when needed

Sunshine Learning Center is more than just an institution; it is a beacon of hope and transformation for special children and their families, driven by an unwavering commitment to their well-being and development.

Q. Do you think our conventional school needs to introduce such a curriculum in their school as well for special children?

Government is assertive in the policy of inclusion. Schools are repudiating in a polite way, particularly when it comes to admitting and providing for children with special needs. There are several key issues at play in this context. Firstly, schools often claim that they lack the expertise required to accommodate and support children with special needs. Additionally, the financial burden associated with hiring highly trained therapists can be a significant deterrent for schools. Therapists command professional-level salaries, and many institutions are hesitant to allocate the necessary resources for this purpose. Furthermore, schools may not fully understand the importance of close monitoring and therapeutic support, including speech, occupational, and physiotherapy services.

It is unfortunate that many schools in Bangladesh prioritize commercial interests over the educational needs of special children. In some cases, schools may admit these children but fail to provide them with the necessary support, leading to isolation and ineffective education. These children require constant and specialized monitoring, and teachers need proper training to understand how to work with them effectively. The education system in Bangladesh is currently lacking in this regard, and there is a pressing need for teachers to receive at least basic training in behavioral and special needs education.

To address these issues and create a more inclusive and child-friendly educational environment, it is essential for both the public and private sectors to collaborate. In foreign countries like Thailand, the private sector has made significant strides in the education sector, enhancing its quality and effectiveness. Private institutions in Bangladesh have the potential to play a pivotal role in improving the educational landscape.

One key aspect of this improvement lies in teacher training. To accommodate special children, teachers should undergo training in special education to better understand and assist these students effectively. Without proper training, schools may struggle to provide the necessary support, especially when there are only a few special needs students among a larger group. As a result, parents are increasingly turning to specialized centers, such as ours, to ensure their children receive the comprehensive care and education they deserve. We actively encourage parents to engage in social communication programs for their children and are committed to creating a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for all.

Q. How do you tailor your programs to meet the diverse needs of students with different learning disabilities?

Sunshine Learning Center boasts a fully equipped and highly specialized team of therapists, which is a rarity in Bangladesh. With a total of 10 therapists, our center is well-equipped to cater to a wide range of special needs. Among our therapists, we have 4 dedicated speech therapists and 5 occupational therapists, each with their unique areas of expertise.

To ensure the smooth operation of our therapeutic services, we have appointed a head therapist who oversees and manages all therapeutic activities. This head therapist plays a pivotal role in coordinating and monitoring the various therapeutic interventions. In addition to our speech and occupational therapists, we also have a skilled physiotherapist to address physical challenges.

Our special educators are highly qualified and are well-versed in the nuances of working with children with special needs. Within our speech therapy team, we have therapists specializing in high-level functioning, while another focuses on addressing lower-level functioning and non-verbal communication challenges. For complex cases, we have senior therapists who bring extensive experience to the table.

In the field of occupational therapy, our experts cater to various needs. We have an OPT (Oral Placement Therapy) specialist who specializes in addressing issues related to oral health, dietary challenges, olfactory stimulation, gustatory stimulation and expanding the variety of foods to help children develop a broader understanding of taste. Since we work with multidisciplinary cases, we often encounter issues like stomach aches, which require us to closely manage and monitor the dietary habits of our students. We also collaborate with nutritionists when needed.

Our occupational therapists cover a wide spectrum of sensory issues, massage therapy, and address problems related to the spine and head. Each therapist is assigned specific responsibilities, allowing us to comprehensively address the diverse challenges that our students may face.

Q. What are some of the common challenges faced by students with learning disabilities, and how does Sunshine Learning Center address these challenges?

At Sunshine Learning Center, we have no reservations or insecurities when it comes to the children’s disabilities. Our team initially comprised 6 faculty members and 2 assistants. However, due to our expanding services, we now have 22 faculty members available during various time slots, ensuring that every group of children, typically 10-12 per group, receives the necessary attention and care. In cases where a child requires more intensive support, we ensure that 2-3 therapists are available to provide the required assistance.

Additionally, we have a dedicated rescue team in place to handle any unexpected situations or emergencies that may arise. We also closely monitor and manage situations where a child with heightened behavior may pose a challenge to our therapists or other students. Teamwork is at the core of our approach, and we regularly hold discussions to collaboratively address and resolve any issues that may arise.

Q. What is your vision for the future of Sunshine Learning Center, and how do you hope to expand your impact in the coming years?

Our plan for the upcoming year is to expand our services by opening small service centers in Niketon, Lalmatia, Puran Dhaka, and Wari in February and March. We also aim to extend our reach to other cities, with potential expansion efforts in Chittagong. In the short term, we intend to establish a vocational training center in June and July of the following year, specifically tailored for children aged 15 and above. As our students grow, we recognize the importance of providing them with the skills they need to lead independent lives.

Currently, our focus is primarily on the elementary sector. However, we have encountered older children in need of support and training, which has led to our plans for the vocational training center. We are committed to addressing the evolving needs of our students as they transition into adulthood.

In the long term, our vision extends to creating homes for special children, particularly those who may require ongoing care and support. These homes will serve as a refuge for individuals with special needs, even after their parents are no longer able to provide care. We have aspirations to expand this model internationally, but our primary focus remains rooted in providing ethical and values-based care. We aim to foster a sense of community where the parents of special children can come together to support this endeavor.

Although we are dedicated to our cause and operate as a non-profit organization, we are registered and open to working with marginal profit, should individuals or organizations come forward to support our mission. The special child sector in Bangladesh is in high demand, and there is a significant scope for meaningful work. While profitability may be limited within this sector, we believe that the broader benefits to society and the potential for future growth make this initiative worthwhile. We are committed to making a positive impact on the lives of special children and their families while also considering sustainable development for our organization in the future.
