Art Meets Fashion

Founder of 1972, Niharika Momtaz, teaming up with her 18 year old daughter, is happy to announce the exclusive Dhaka launch of her new luxury conscious brand with bespoke pieces, @1972conscious at DBF premises on Saturday, the 20th November at 4pm. Join us and witness our journey to warp and weft! We have weaved artwork from the famous artist Quamrul Hasan into our local Gamcha Sarees, as well as Origami-inspired unisex Gamcha Scarves. It took us eight long months of “trial and error” and relentless persuasion to reach the current stage of weaving a wearable art.

We are trying to immortalize Potua Qamrul Hassan’s artworks by creating this at the same time as his centenary birthday to ensure that his artwork is available and accessible for next 100 years

We wanted to show how centuries-old art could be translated into a bold contemporary design that blends perfectly with modern-day fashion. Our collection is a riot of colours, adhering to palettes that each handloom is known for. Contrasting the bright green, yellow, orange, red, deep blues, teal and pomegranate pinks with golden and silver Zari. I had initiated a creative support system for the local arts and crafts industry in 2018 with the aim to help create and translate artwork in the form of handloom textiles in Bangladesh. The goal is also to bring sustainable, unique and luxury fashion to your conscious wardrobe.

We believe everyone deserves to enjoy fashion, regardless of body, background and budget. And we are passionate about making this a reality. As an added commitment to the environment, we will have a tree planted for every order placed through our website and social media platforms from December 2021“

Durjoy Rahman, Founder of Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation mentioned “We are glad that 1972 Conscious is working in sustainable textiles and bringing many concepts for the first time in the fashion platforms covering textiles. The arts of Quamrul Hasan hold an important position in our contemporary art and craft history. The use of motifs from his art in the traditional textiles by 1972 Conscious is an adorable effort and this endeavor shows a blend of folklore and textiles in very modern concept.”

DBF is happy to be connected with this endeavors as this is an ecosystem where everyone should support and work with each other for sustainable long term growth and for achieving an invincible Bangladesh.

Rubaba Dowla, as an avid collector of Quamrul Hasan’s work saying “ I am delighted to see how Niharika has translated century old artwork in to contemporary designs in the form of handloom textiles in Bangladesh. Our very own Gamcha saree with woven artwork of potua Quamrul Hassan is yet another reflection of her creativity . It’s time we all focus on ethical and sustainable art forms and I wish @1972conscious all the very best for this new endeavor. “

Shumona Hassan, Quamrul Hassan’s only daughter says, “ Art is not what you draw rather what you make others see. It is so true for a great artist like Quamrul Hassan. He could draw on the smallest canvas like the back of his visiting card and make it come alive. I would like to thank Niharika for her professionalism for taking prior permission and not infringing copyright”.
