Riding Out of Stereotypes

1.   Let’s start with your introduction and what are you studying now?

I am Sami Ahmmed. I am a student of Banophool Adibashi Green Heart College and right now I am in class 10, preparing for my SSC exam next year.

2.   How did you get into the delivery service and how did the passion for cycling started?

I got into the delivery service with the help of one of my friends who was in it as well. He used to deliver food by cycling and I found his work very interesting. Since I always have a passion for cycling, I thought I should also give it a try and by doing it, I could earn some extra pocket money for myself as well. So I talked with him and he helped me to get into it. This is how it all started and gradually all of my friends started doing it.

3.   What were the responses you have received from your family members and others while starting?

At the very beginning only my mother and aunty knew about this job. I was a little afraid to let my father inform about it. Later, I got very good support from all my family members and they appreciated my work. However, my school friends were not so sure about it, but when they saw the post which got viral and came to know that I am doing it from my passion towards cycling, they also got convinced.

4.   What part of this job do you enjoy the most?

I enjoy it the most when I receive a good amount of orders from a common area. It reduces my stress and also helps me to deliver all the orders in time.

Many times I don’t receive much of a support from customers and maximum people do judge me as a poor delivery guy who is doing it for money but actually this is not true. Many of them can’t accept it as a normal job.

5.   How do you balance your work besides your studies or other regular stuff?

I do my delivery task on a shifting basis. Like doing online classes in the morning and then starting my delivery. I try to maintain a fixed timeline, for example, from 12 PM to 6 PM I complete all my delivery and other stuffs. After that, I spend my time with my family and studying. So this is how I try to maintain my routine.

6.   What is the most challenging part of delivering food?

The most challenging part is to deliver the food properly and in time. The ultimate satisfaction and joy comes out when anyone can receive the order properly and in time. Ensuring it consistently is quite challenging though.

7.   How do you keep yourself motivated and what are the skills you are improving through this?

The way all my family members and friends are supporting me is something that kept me loving this job and I stay motivated. Before getting into this I used to be a very shy type of person and didn’t use to talk much with unknown people.  Basically, I was an introvert but now I think I developed my communication skill a lot by doing this job and additionally, I am improving my cycling skills because now I am doing it regularly.

8.   Tell us about your other hobbies and what are things you like to do?

I like to sing and besides cycling, I also enjoy spending time with my friends.

9.   Share your future plan?

I would like to be an engineer in future. However if I can’t then I also like to do business and become a businessman. I also want to do something unique for society and want to be remembered for my work.
