War and Peace: Not a Leo Tolstoy Story

Your first day at your first job can be nerve wracking. But don’t worry. If you were able to land the job, you must have something in you. There are no favors in the hiring business. Besides that, your coworkers will understand the anxiety of your first day at work and so will be much more understanding and open to you.

What you have to do is use this window of opportunity as the base to build from for your first impression to every future ones. Otherwise, a wrong start can lead to a bumpy ride that can come with unreasonable behavior.

So, here are some do’s and don’ts’ for your first day at work:

1. Prepare well

You have to make a good first impression, and the best way to do that is by showing your coworkers that you want to be here. So, dress smart, be there on time, and make sure to pack up all the essentials of a first job, such as a notebook, a pen, a pen drive, and your laptop even.

2.  Ask and Tell

It is important to make your first day matter by making conversation with all your coworkers. So, don’t hesitate to say hello, smile and make small talk and ask any questions that you may have. It is important, though, to not seem too eager or pushy. You don’t wanna be that person, trust us.
It can be hard to remember names too. But you can avoid embarrassing yourself by simply joking about how you’ve “met a hundred people today. Sorry!”

3. Make notes

Offices can have certain rules that are important to follow. So, you should make note of it so as to avoid any embarrassing situations. You can use this to remember names as well. It will help you figure out any points you may have confusion with.

4. Don’t overdo it

You might think that giving it your all on the very first day will knock everyone off their boots. But that’s the furthest from a good idea. You do not have to stay back late just to impress your boss. Take what you’ve learned and go home to reflect on it.

5. Participate

Make yourself at home, literally. Volunteer to help out your coworkers if they have too much work on their hands. Work efficiently at the most trivial things you do, even if it is just making coffee for everyone. Take these little steps to make your coworkers feel like you are open to being a part of their team and that they can trust you.

The fact that you’re willing to understand the culture of the work environment and trying to adapt yourself to it should help your coworkers to understand that you actually care about the job. It should also help you build your confidence and form better relationships with them.

At the end of the day..

It’s okay to be nervous. But once you’re through with the day, you’ll realize how easy it can be with the right attitude. And people will instantly recognize you for your potential and your personality. So, pay attention to the people around you and try to understand them better as they try to do the same for you.
But the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the day. You’re not going to get your first day back. Be positive, work efficiently and be careful on hitting “reply all” when emailing anyone from work!

You. Yes, you.
