Shocker or Well Deserved? The End of the Emmy Journey of “Game of Thrones”

You might be one of those cool kids who don’t watch “Game of Thrones” because of the mainstream following the show ended up gaining. Regardless, you know about the show, its influence, it’s incredibly talented cast and crew, the pop culture takeover and how the storylines got creepy sometimes. Let’s face it. You can’t not know about a show that’s the most pirated, the most-watched, quite possibly the most expensive, that has made a couple of “Guinness World Records”, has one of the highest numbers of awards and nominations (cough*37 Emmys on the 68th Emmy Awards* cough) and honestly, we can keep going.

The series practically became a cultural phenomenon in an incredibly short time and as all of its records would suggest, rightfully so! Earning its first nomination for “Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series” after the show’s very FIRST season was just the beginning of what went on to become Emmy domination. Winning the award for the first time in 2015, for Season 5 seemed well deserving and long overdue at the time. However, the controversy surrounding the show’s development started soon after as storylines over the years faced a lot of criticism. Taking the biggest Emmy award of the night for Season 7 in 2018 was obviously exactly what the team wanted but the season itself faced a lot of questions about its pace and storyline. However, the biggest shocker quite possibly came with the show’s win for this category at the Emmys this year.

The general favorites as expressed by various media outlets and fans as well were FX’s Pose set in the 1980s, HBO’s Succession a satirical comedy-drama as well as BBC’s Killing Eve where both leads are women. Which is why fans and even celebrities shared their disapproval over the Game of Thrones taking the biggest award of the night at the Emmys. Don’t believe us? Here’s a little peak from Twitter.

And that’s not all. Some fans also expressed dissatisfaction at the fact that Lena Headey who brought Cersei Lannister to life, didn’t win an Emmy for her portrayal. And although Peter Dinklage deserves nothing but the best for being the incredible actor that he is, some fans were quick to point out that maybe it was Alfie Allen or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who should have gotten the chance to hold that prestigious award. What about you? Do you agree with the wins? Or do you agree with the fans?

You. Yes, you.
