Rain or Shine: How To Dress For Dhaka’s Unpredictable Weather

– Toonaz Zina Ahmed

Dhaka, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, has always had an incredibly diverse climate. Bangladesh is known as a wetland; Dhaka has both damp and dry weather. Unlike other countries, Bangladesh has six seasons, known as “The Land of Six Seasons.” The country inherits a tropical warm summer and chilly winters.

Although we know when each season starts and ends, it’s pretty tricky to dress accordingly, as the weather predictions are often wrong. That’s why we decided to talk about how to style ourselves to combat the unpredictable weather in Dhaka.

Summer Time

The first season, Summer, lasts from late February to May. This season is known as Grisma, when temperatures may go as high as 35 or 38 degrees—a hot and humid weather.

The city is faced with various difficulties like heatstroke, droughts, etc. During this time, it’s quite challenging to go through your wardrobe to find the right fit properly.

Styling For The Burning Heat

From morning till sunset, the scorching sunlight will require you to wear something light. The sweaty and sticky weather may be fought with linen or cotton-based clothing. As days go by throughout these months, you’ll find the weather drastically warming up on the most unusual days.

Whether you’re using public transport or cruising with your car, it’s a safe bet to carry an umbrella, sunglasses, or a sun hat with you at all times. Cotton is a very breathable fabric that also absorbs sweat.

Hence, a light-colored neutral cotton T-shirt paired with shorts would be an ideal fit for boys. For the girls in Dhaka, pastel-colored linen kurtis, blouses, or crop tops are usually the best choice to beat the heat.

Footwear and Accessories

Additionally, people are often seen carrying portable wireless fans throughout the summer. This accessory has a dual effect, allowing one to look cute while staying cool.

Lastly, flip-flops and sandals with thick soles are the best choice for walking, as the hot pavements may cause blisters. Avoid leather shoes, as they make you sweat and may cause your feet to stink!

Rainy Season

The second season, Monsoon starts in June and ends in August. In Bangla, this season is known as Barsha. Dhaka experiences heavy rain on random days during this season. The day may start clear, but before you know it, the city will be raining cats and dogs. So, how does one prepare for these sudden storms?

The Art Of Layering

Although the temperatures are lower than in summer, humidity remains constant, along with muddy roads, strong winds, and the challenge of wearing your best clothes for fear of getting drenched. To protect yourself from harsh storms, dressing in lightweight clothing is a must. Again, cotton or khadi tops would be the best options.

As the streets are dirty, an occasional splash of mud could completely stain your clothes. This can be avoided by wearing dark-colored clothes, which are easier to wash. Both men and women can layer their clothing to stay warm and dry.

As a result, you’ll be prepared for any weather! This can be done by carrying water-resistant jackets or shawls.

Additionally, wearing knee-length dresses can be advantageous, as jeans may get dirty. Lastly, remember to carry tiny portable umbrellas, ponchos, and raincoats!

Autumn Breeze

The following two seasons are Autumn and Late Autumn, which last from September to December. Known as Sharat and Hemanta, these seasons bring cool breezes with occasional rainfall.

Covering Up Is Key

Women can wear midi skirts to go out, providing coverage and comfort. Jeans are perfect for this weather, so pairing them with a lightweight cardigan or sweater will help prevent you from feeling cold during the evenings or early mornings.

Closed-toe shoes or sneakers will protect your feet from unexpected rainfall. Windbreakers, which are lightweight and protect against harsh winds, are also a practical option.

Winter and Spring

Winter (Shishir) begins in late December and lasts until February, followed by Spring (Bashanta) from February to March. Although winter in Dhaka is not too cold, layering is essential.

Cozy Winter Clothing

Fleece is ideal for winter, as some days may be colder than others. Men and women can quickly wear thermal shirts with joggers. Carrying gloves, beanies, and scarves is necessary for early winter mornings.

Spring Essentials

As spring blooms, temperatures rise, and the days become warmer. While the weather is quite pleasant this season, humidity increases, leading to variable conditions. Avoiding heavy fabrics like wool and switching to linen would be the best choice.

As the weather warms, sandals with good support can be a practical choice, especially during the later part of the season. Breathable fabrics like cotton and linen become essential as the weather changes, while versatile bottoms such as cropped pants or skirts keep you comfortable.

Don’t forget to carry a compact umbrella to stay prepared for spring showers, and protect yourself from the sun with sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat as the days grow sunnier.

Whether rain or shine, dressing with a mix of layers, breathable fabrics, and practical accessories will ensure you’re ready for whatever Dhaka’s weather brings.
