Possibilities the ‘Bangabandhu-1’ Satellite holds for Bangladesh

The word “satellite” refers to a machine launched into space which moves around the Earth or another body in space. The Earth and the moon are examples of natural satellites. Not long ago, satellites were mystical, top-secret entities used in a military capacity. Now, we can’t imagine any activity without them. Starting from weather reports to television signals to GPS receivers, the use of satellites is very much ingrained in our lives. Thanks to them, we can see images in deep space captured by the Hubble Space Telescope and marvel at the astronauts living on the ISS.

Bangladesh’s first communication satellite, Bangabandhu-1, has been the torch bearer for Bangladesh’s technological progress. Currently, seven private television stations and three channels of state-run Bangladesh Television have started airing through it. This is a feat, considering Bangladesh meets its demand for satellite connectivity by renting bandwidth from foreign operators – which costs a pretty penny.

However, sadly, Bangabandhu-1 is sitting up in space (somewhere around Indonesia) and doing nothing but airing channels nobody would give money to watch. Don’t get us wrong, that’s a feat, but when you’re destined for greatness, doing menial tasks can get…underwhelming. So what can Bangabandhu-1 actually do for our golden Bangladesh?

DTH Service & Video Distribution

Service that will stream digital television, radio and associated data directly to very small and medium antennas. Broadcasters will be distributing their content services to intermediaries like cable TV network operators, or re-broadcasters like DTH Operators in other countries. Zee Bangla will still be broadcasted (Bangabandhu-1 shakes in dismay), but hey, we might finally be convinced to watch TV if it means we get more quality channels. Word has it that the BCSCL has made a deal with the country’s first direct-to-home company RealVU. It’s testing channels by 48 local and international channels through Bangabandhu-1.

VSAT Private Networks & Broadband

This service will allow users to remotely access the Internet at high speed with high quality of service. The country’s remote parts – haors, hilly parts, coastal areas and deep-sea zones – will get internet service from the satellite. It will also be helpful in distance learning and telemedicine services. In a world where the internet is not a luxury anymore, Bangladesh might finally be able to catch up.

Communications Trunks

Imagine visiting your extended family in the village and not having to tell your friends that you will be dropping off the face of the earth for a few days. When disaster strikes, Bangabandhu-1 will provide uninterrupted telecommunication service in national or regional natural calamities. Bangabandhu-1 will be sitting pretty up there and basking in your praise.
