Jewellery – The New Embroidery

Jewellery has become an essential to designs over the years. And many designs were even created to highlight them in both fall 2020 and spring 2021 collections. Jewellery is no longer considered accessories but an integral part of fashionable garments.

Daniel Roseberry, the Artistic Director at Schiaparelli, said “Jewellery is the new embroidery for us. That’s the exact phrase that I’ve been talking about with my team. For me, it just felt so much more modern to start to imbue the codes into jewels as opposed to trying to find our way with embroidery.” And according to Elizabeth von der Goltz, the Global Buying director at Net-a-Porter, jewellery represents a more modern era than embroidery does.

Designer Gabriela Hearst, whose collection of spring 2021 was inspired by the shell bracelet that her mother had gotten her from Easter Island right before of the pandemic started, says that jewellery has the power to make garments feel timeless, making them beautiful and unique.

At the Green Carpet Fashion Awards’ virtual show last month, Ellie Goulding, British Singer, had worn a couture dress which was a collaboration between Ralph & Russo and Gemfields. Instead of going with the traditional idea of incorporating hundreds of Zambian emeralds as an embroidery, Tamara Ralph, the Creative Director, decided to use the gems to create an elegant drape around the upper arms.

Also, Christopher Kane, Scottish Fashion Designer, wanted to work with jewellery with the outfit’s design revolving around it. His fall 2020 collection consisted of winter coats with collars that had sewn in floral brooches onto silicon pieces.
