Confused about how to interact with people with blindness without hurting them unintentionally? Here’s a list of simple tips for you to communicate better with them.
Do’s
- Introduce yourself every time you meet them.
- If they look confused, ask if they need help. If they accept, only then proceed to help them.
- Talk to them in a normal tone, instead of shouting, like you’ve talked to any other person.
- Talk to them directly, instead of expecting others around them to answer for them.
- When going somewhere, describe what you see to help them improve the mental map of their surroundings.
- When giving directions, be as specific as possible, rather than saying “Over there” or “That way” for obvious reasons.
- Let them know if you see hazards that they may not be aware of, and give detailed instructions as to how to avoid it.
Don’ts
- Don’t use offensive words to describe them, such as “handicapped” and “disabled”.
- Don’t attempt to shake hands or give high fives without giving them a heads up.
- Don’t think they’re incapable of doing normal things. If you’re confused, just ask.
- Don’t touch them while assisting them without their consent.
- Don’t get offended if they refuse to take your help.
- Don’t distract their guide dogs.
- Don’t leave the conversation without their notice.
