Allyson Felix new world record holder ten months into motherhood

33-year-old American sprinter broke Usain Bolt’s record by securing her 12th gold medal as she and her team placed first in the mixed-gender 4×400 meter relay at the 2019 IAAF World Championships.

Usain Bolt currently holds 11 gold medals at the event.

Other members of the team are as follows: Michael Cherry who sealed the victory in the anchor leg, Wilbert London and Courtney Okolo also ran legs for the U.S

The medal performance was her first after returning to the sport, 10 months after giving birth to her first child, Camryn, prematurely.

Allyson just hasn’t broken one of the world records in sporting history, she has also fought for the rights of female athletes with sponsor Nike, forcing them to amend their laws for pregnant athletes.

Allyson penned an op-ed article in the New York Times about how the brand asked her to take a 70% pay cut on a new contract after becoming a mother and declined to contractually agree not to punish her should her performance decline.

This article forced Nike to change its policy on pregnant athletes, preventing female pregnant athletes from performance-related deductions for 18 months afterward.

Her deal with Nike, which ended in December 2017, was not extended; however, the brand changed its policy on pregnant athletes after Felix’s article was published, preventing female athletes who are pregnant from facing performance-related deductions.
