New Year the New Way

This will not be a traditional Bengali New Year where your extended family comes over to your house or you go out with your friends or cousins. But, don’t let that stop the festivities. Help your parents decorate the house and cook delicious meals. Just because guests aren’t coming over, doesn’t mean you don’t get to dress pretty and eat amazing food. And, of course, you can go online to see your friends and do virtual activities together.

REUNION

You can have a virtual reunion with your school buddies or university pals. Invite them all on video call and catch up on what’s happening in one another’s lives. You could also do the following with them if you don’t just want to sit and chat.

FASHION SHOW

You could put on makeup and wear your finest clothes to do a ramp walk on a virtual fashion show. However, there’s a trend right now called the #BrushChallenge where everyone does a “before” and “after” segment and go from having a normal household look to flexing gorgeous ready-to-party makeover. You could try doing it with your friends and post it on social media afterwards.

OPEN MIC

You can bring in the cultural vibe that you usually get on pohela boishakh at home, and sing classical Bengali songs with your loved ones. They’d all, or maybe one or two songs, may remind you of some fond memories that you could reminisce together. Some of you may even be poets or writers; don’t hold back from showing off your talent, your audience awaits!

SILENT DISCO

No, you don’t have to go out of your house for it. You and everyone else on the video call will have to put on music as loud as you want, but using your headphones. It may seem a little funny from a third party’s perspective, but you’ll get to dance off with your friends and “paaartay”!

PHOTO SESSION

This is the ritual that you won’t have to give up. You could set up your room for that one perfect shot, or go to your roof or backyard, when nobody is around, and pose to post!

You. Yes, you.
