Since everyone around the world is stuck at home, more and more people are starting to watch movies on virus outbreaks, zombies, and apocalypse, as they seem to be the most relatable situation right now. Here is a list of the 11 best movies that fall under those categories.

 

 

1)     Contagion – IMDb Rating: 6.7

Would you believe this movie was out almost 10 years ago?

A deadly virus was discovered after Beth Emhoff and her son dies. While the US Centers for Disease Control struggles to curb its spread, a worldwide panic ensues.

 

 

2)     World War Z (2013) – IMDb Rating: 7.0

A United Nations employee, Gerry Lane played by Brad Pitt, is fighting off zombies due to a virus outbreak. It is based on the book of the same name written by Max Brooks.

It is directed by  Marc Forster, and has Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Ludi Boeken, Fana Mokoena, David Morse, Peter Capaldi, Pierfrancesco Favino, Ruth Negga, and David Andrews in supporting roles.

 

 

3)     I am Legend (2007) – IMDb Rating: 7.2

A scientist named Robert Neville, played by Will Smith, is the last man surviving a pandemic due to a man-made virus. The virus turns everyone into mutated monsters, and Robert tries to find a cure for it. It is also based on a book of the same name, and is written by Richard Matheson.

The movie is directed by Francis Lawrence, and has Alice Braga and Dash Mihok as supporting actors.

 

 

4)     Dawn of the Dead (2004) – IMDb Rating: 7.3

A group of people take refuge in a shopping mall from a pandemic which turns humans into zombies, and start to face problems within the mall as well. It is the remake of the movie with the same name previously released in 1978 (which has a higher IMDb Rating of 7.9 by the way).

The one released in 2004 is directed by Zack Snyder who made his directorial debut with it, and the original is directed and written by George A. Romero. The remake has Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer, with cameos of the original cast members such as Ken Foree, Scott Reiniger, and Tom Savini.

 

 

5)     [REC] (2007) – IMDb Rating: 7.4

A reporter named Ángela Vidal, played by Manuela Velasco, and her cinematographer named Pablo, played by Pablo Rosso as Pablo, get stuck in a building with a person infected by a virus that gives its host super strength.

The Spanish movie is directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, who were also the writers along with Luis A. Berdejo. It also stars Ferrán Terraza, Jorge-Yamam Serrano, David Vert, Vicente Gil, Martha Carbonell, and Carlos Vicente.

 

 

6)     A Quiet Place (2018) – IMDb Rating: 7.5

A family struggles to survive in a world taken over by noise-sensitive creatures that feast on human flesh. Moreover, there is a new family member on its way. They talk in sign language most of the time to avoid being noticed by the monsters.

John Krasinski is the director as well as the lead actor of the movie. His real-life wife, Emily Blunt, plays the role of his character’s wife in the movie. There is also Millicent Simmonds, a deaf actress, who plays the role of their daughter, along with Noah Jupe and Cade Woodward as their sons in the movie. The sequel of the movie was supposed to be released in March but due to the current situation, the release is being delayed.

 

 

7)     Train to Busan (2016) – IMDb Rating: 7.5

A father named Seok-woo, played by Gong Yoo and his daughter, Su-an, played by Kim Su-an get stuck in the middle of a virus outbreak on their way to Busan to meet Su-an’s mother for her birthday.

The Korean movie is directed by Yeon Sang-ho and has many actors in supporting roles such as Ma Dong-seok, Jung Yu-mi, Kim Eui-sung, Choi Woo-shik and Ahn So-hee. The sequel of the movie, called ‘Peninsula’, is said to be premiered this year, but nobody can say when for sure because of the pandemic.

 

 

8)     The Painted Veil (2006) – IMDb Rating: 7.5

Medical personnel named Walter Fane, played by Edward Norton, struggles to fight the Cholera epidemic in a small village in China. The movie is based on a novel written by W. Somerset Maugham. It also has Naomi Watts, who plays the role of Kitty Garstin Fane, the cheating wife.

 

 

9)     28 Days Later (2002), and 28 Weeks Later (2007) – IMDb Rating: 7.6 and 7.0 respectively

‘28 Days Later’ is about a highly contagious virus turning everyone into zombies and revolves around 4 survivors in the movie played by Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Megan Burns and Brendan Gleeson. It is directed by Danny Boyle.

5 years later the sequel came out which is based on what happens after the virus enters the city of the survivors by a carrier and starts to infect everyone again. The sequel is directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and stars Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Catherine McCormack, Imogen Poots, and Idris Elba.

 

 

10)  Shaun of the Dead (2004) – IMDb Rating: 7.9

Shaun, played by Simon Pegg, is a salesman whose life gets upside down when he has to deal with zombies in his neighbourhood. The movie shows how he, and many others, takes refuge in a pub with and what happens afterwards. There are other characters as well played by Kate Ashfield, Lucy Davis, Nick Frost, Dylan Moran, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton.

The movie is directed by Edgar Wright and its name is a wordplay of the name ‘The Dawn of the Dead’. This one also falls under the genre of comedy even though there are flesh-eating zombies everywhere.

 

 

11)  Virus (2019) – IMDb Rating: 8.1

The Indian movie is based on Kerala and is about the outbreak of Nipah Virus. It shows how easily the virus spreads from one person to another causing mayhem and death.

It is directed by Aashiq Abu who is also the producer, along with Rima Kallingal. The movie has Kunchacko Boban, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Asif Ali, Tovino Thomas, Rashin Rahman, Soubin Shahir, Indrajith Sukumaran, Asha Kelunni Nair, Rima Kallingal, Madonna Sebastian, and Sreenath Bhasi playing different roles.
