We all grew up knowing that skirts and dresses are meant for girls, shirts and pants are for boys. But times have changed. Fashion designers have started to collaborate masculine and feminine clothing to adopt a more androgynous style.
Before we get into that, it’s important to know what “androgynous” fashion really is. Androgynous style is described as fashion that doesn’t conform to any gender stereotypes.
A man wearing a traditionally feminine outfit would be deemed as an androgynous fashion statement.
Pants to kilts
You might have never associated skirts with men’s clothing, but Scottish men have brought back the style of kilts back into mainstream fashion with different styled kilts for every occasion- utility kilts for work, leather kilt for parties and hybrid kilts if you’re confused between the two!
Surprisingly, the wearing of kilts can be considered androgynous when worn by women. Because, albeit of being traditionally worn my men, women and girls of all ages have started sporting kilts all across the world.
Formal Suits to Track suits
Part of flaunting a formal look is embracing the style of suits or blazers. Blazers are always in style if you know how to wear it.
On the flip side of things, track suits are no longer a cool, soccer dad thing or even just a male jock thing. With androgynous queens like Jeffree Star bringing tracksuits into fashion, it has become a fashion statement worn by female celebrities all across the world. Girls can be seen wearing track suits over their crop tops to work their sporty yet cute vibes!
DIY?
Want one side of your hair short and the other long? Go for it! You want to wear a skirt over a pair of skinny jeans? Great! Androgyny is all about breaking the boundaries of gender. Get creative! One piece of clothing can’t be labelled androgynous – it depends on how you wear it – there are some favourites that scream androgyny. Some of the current androgynous staples include:
1. Loose, black, geometric clothing is a favourite in the fashion and many style blogger communities. Although it can be labelled as Goth fashion, black and non-form fitting clothing is very fluid through anything you identify with.
2. Capes and hoods can be worn in more ways than one, with Steampunk style belts or futuristic geometric styles.
3. For the nerds out there, here is your time to shine. Science fiction inspired styles are slowly coming into limelight due to futuristic and “oh-so-out-there” vibes. For example: neon plastic clothing, shiny metallic materials, and colorful alien style makeup and rainbow hair.
