1970’s Soul Singer, Bill Wither Passes Away

The legendary soul singer, Bill Withers, age 81 passed away on Monday in Los Angeles due to heart complications, the family told the Associated Press. The family is devastated by the loss of a devoted husband and father

He was among the most compelling song writers of his generations. Ain’t No Sunshine and Lean On Me were among his most popular hits. The artist was a three time Grammy Award winner. Around mid-1980 he decided to lead a private life withdrawing from music.

His first album, Just As I, with the legendary Brooker T. Jones was signed to Sussex records in 1971. It had the hits Grandma’s Hands and Ain´t No Sunshine, which was inspired by the Jack Lemmon film Days Of Wine And Roses.

‘The hardest thing in songwriting is to be simple and yet profound. And Bill seemed to understand, intrinsically and instinctively, how to do that,’ Sting said in Still Bill, a 2010 documentary of Withers.

The current scenario facing the world draws inspiration from his music. Many use music to get through this difficult times creating their own renditions of “Lean on Me”.

Sometimes in our lives we all have pain

We all have sorrow

But if we are wise

We know that there’s always tomorrow

Lean on me, when you’re not strong

And I’ll be your friend

I’ll help you carry on

For it won’t be long

‘Til I’m gonna need

Somebody to lean on
